The patent diagram for this newly under development Motorola device explains how an incoming call can be answered without removing the device from your pocket, all that is needed is one tap to reallocate the virtual buttons to be placed on the end of the device. The possibilities that could come from using a device with a wrap-around screen surface still appear to be rather limited. The Motorola Razr 5G flip phone is the company's most recent attempt at changing things up a bit, with the Motorola Razr 3 rumored to be expected later this year, but this new patent could suggest they're following the footsteps of previously released models like the Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha (opens in new tab) that has a fully 'Surround Display' design with a similar wrap-around screen surface. Patent filed by Motorola for wrap-around display reveals that the phone will be able to turn itself off when put in your pocket (Image credit: LetsGoDigital) (opens in new tab) The patent describes that various sensors, such as a motion, temperature and a gravity sensor will be used to measure when the smartphone is in a pocket and how the device will function once removed from your pocket or purse, adjusting the interface of the device accordingly. Other features we can expect from this new Motorola device can prevent this from happening with the inclusion of in-pocket detection features, virtual buttons, heat detection sensors and consistent stylus pen support. With more screen surface, comes more chance to press buttons you didn't intend to or pocket dial a friend. It remains unclear where Motorola are proposing to place the device's camera system. The bottom of the smartphone is expected to have access to the SIM compartment and USB-C charging port accompanied by a microphone and speaker, with the top of the device hosting an additional mic and speaker with the power button. I would also be disappointed if the next generation iPhone doesn’t sport an all-new design. I love the iPhone 5s design, but it is an evolution of iPhone 4, which was introduced in 2010, so it is high time Apple shakes things up again in the design department. And even if Apple or Samsung end up launching such as device, the display would have to wrap around the edges rather than the three-sided display shown in the concept. The display would also have to be made of unbreakable glass as such bezel-less devices would be even more prone to accidental damage. It seems like a solution in search of a problem. The iPhone 6 concept features the same iPhone 5s/iPhone 5 design, but has a display along the sides instead of the antennae bands, which could be used to give access to system toggles and quick launch icons.Ĭheck out the video of the iPhone 6 concept created by Iskander Utebayev below:įrankly, I am still not convinced we need a device with a curved display. So Iskander Utebayev has created a new iPhone 6 concept to give us a glimpse of what an iPhone with three-sided display may look like. There are rumors that Samsung may release smartphone with a display that wraps around the sides in second half of 2014.
